Iceland’s most popular attractions bundled together in a one day tour. Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir are so beautiful -you might end up in shock after seeing them all in one day.
On this tour you’re going to see plenty of water: deep water, clear water, hot water, flying water, fast water and tumbling white water… all the while remaining firmly on dry land.
At Þingvellir National Park you’ll see impossibly clear, deep blue water in Peningagjá (into which you might like to throw a coin or two, make a wish and watch how long they take to sink to the deep bottom). You may also see Lake Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s biggest, which is world famous for diving due to its spookily clear water. They say it’s like space walking. Þingvellir is also famous for being where modern democracy was founded about a thousand years ago, for the fact that the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling the place apart, and for being the place where Icelanders executed their accused ‘witches’ by drowning. It’s also famous for its natural beauty, varied plants, birds and animals and the Öxarárfoss waterfall. And that’s why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But Öxarárfoss can’t compare to Gullfoss. Gullfoss is among the most inspiring natural phenomena in Europe: a huge, roaring staircase of a waterfall, throwing up clouds of spray and succeeding enviably at making us humans feel very, very small indeed.
The Golden Circle trip then moves on to Geysir – which is the geyser that donated its name to create the word ‘geyser’. Ironically your chances of seeing Geysir erupt while you are at Geysir these days are extremely slim; but its little brother Strokkur is but a couple of footsteps away and throws scalding water up to 30 metres high every few minutes – and while you’re waiting there’s plenty of other hot springs and bubbling mud pools to keep you entertained.
